Filipino Martial Arts
Traditional "Filipino martial arts" is an umbrella term used to describe the numerous martial art forms including Eskrima/Kali/Arnis that originated in the Philippines. Filipino martial arts include empty-handed techniques as well as blade and stick fighting techniques.
Practitioners of Filipino martial arts are noted for their ability to fight with weapons or empty hands interchangeably. Empty-handed techniques "Hands, fingers, fists, elbows, knees, kicks, locks & blocks" are treated as using just another type of weapon, and weapons training "eskrima sticks & rattan sticks" are used to promote proficiency in empty-handed techniques. The weapons vary in design, size, weight, materials and usage.
The three combat ranges in Filipino martial arts are Corto (Close Range), Medio (Medium Range) and Largo (Long Range). Hakbang, general term for footwork Corto Mano, close range, short movements, minimal extension of arms, legs and weapons, cutting distance Serrada "split step", short range footwork, quick, split action, front and back, low stance.
